Want to serve process or notice on a
business regulated by the Bureau of Insurance?
If a business regulated by the Bureau of Insurance is
authorized to transact business in Virginia as a corporation,
limited liability company, business trust, limited partnership
or registered limited liability partnership, it will have a registered
agent in Virginia for service of process. The sole duty of the
registered agent is to forward to the business any process, notice
or demand that is served on the registered agent.
To determine the name and address of the registered agent
of a business entity that is authorized to transact business in
Virginia, contact the Office of the Clerk of the State Corporation
Commission at (804) 371-9733 or toll-free in Virginia at 1-866-722-2551,
or find the business entity in the Clerk’s Information System,
which can be found on the web at http://www.scc.virginia.gov/division/clk/diracc.htm.
The Clerk of the State Corporation Commission is also
the statutory agent for service of process or notice on certain
insurance-related businesses, such as unlicensed insurers, unlicensed
nonresident insurance brokers and agents, and reciprocal insurers.
The Office of the Clerk has produced a guide form, SOP-19.1,
to assist persons attempting to make service on the Clerk as the
statutory agent of a business. It can be found on the web at http://www.scc.virginia.gov/division/clk/corp.htm.
